Advanced technology contributes significantly to the modern driving experience. Scores of Illinois drivers rely on safety technology to avoid collisions, and manufacturers continually research and develop new safety features. And yes, the presence of “infotainment” technology could make commutes less dull. While tech advancements bring forth much to marvel about, an ominous drawback may exist. Namely, advances in technology might decrease safe driving practices.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety conducted a study that revealed drivers tend to drift away from keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road when relying on driver-assist technology. After about 30 days with a new vehicle, drivers suffer from newfound familiarity with the car and its features. In short, a driver could become overly confident that driver-assist technology will help them avoid trouble.
Technology has its limitations, though. Unexpected problems, such as an animal darting in front of a car, might lead to a crash. If the driver isn’t paying attention to the road, surprises could result in swerving and hitting another vehicle or a tree.
Driver-assist technology intends to lend drivers a virtual helping hand. Even autopilot technology requires drivers to pay some attention to the road, although news reports indicate drivers often fail to do so. And those reports sometimes mention terrible car accidents.
A driver that hopes a “cross-traffic” alert provides safety help at an intersection could reasonably expect the alarm to work. However, the driver still benefits from approach an intersection with caution. Not looking for pedestrians or making an erratic left-hand turn might cause an accident.
Blaming “bad technology” might not always work when facing a lawsuit. Negligent drivers may end up having to pay for accidents that they caused.
