Residents of Chicago, Illinois want to stay safe while driving on the roads. However, data has shown that 2022 has been a bad year for car accident deaths as they have increased.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accident fatalities for the first quarter of 2022 have significantly increased compared to the same time frame a year earlier. During that time, there were more than 9,500 deaths stemming from crashes. A year prior, there were just over 8,900 deaths for comparison. This equates to a 7% increase in traffic fatalities.
The data released by the NHTSA is an indicator for the rest of 2022. If the trends continue, there will be an additional 1.27 deaths in accidents for every 100 million miles driven. In 2021, there were 1.25 deaths for every 100 million miles traveled by motor vehicles.
According to a representative from the NHTSA, the country is moving in the wrong direction in terms of the number of deaths stemming from car accidents. One of the reasons for the uptick in fatal crashes is poor infrastructure, which the Biden Administration acknowledges. U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced a plan for roadway improvements. The National Roadway Safety Strategy aims to make the roads safer and reduce fatalities stemming from traffic accidents.
The NHTSA reported that one of the chief reasons for deadly car accidents is speeding. It is working with the local governments to educate the public about dangerous driving behaviors and protect vulnerable groups. The NHTSA is also providing grants to address the problem of traffic fatalities.
Car accidents can be avoided if drivers use extra caution. Being smart behind the wheel could save lives.
